Dogs

Training treats, dental sticks, and the chews that last more than a minute.

Treats are calories. We label the ones that are worth the calories and tell you honestly which ones are just sugar with a picture of a dog on the packet.

Buying guide

The 10% rule.

Treats should account for no more than a tenth of daily calories. For a 10 kg dog on roughly 600 kcal a day, that is 60 kcal — about two dental sticks, or a great many training crumbs.

This is the quiet reason for most of the slow weight gain we see between annual visits. The food portion is measured carefully and the treats are not counted at all.

Ask before you buy — that is what the counter is for.

Eleni does Wednesday consultations at Exarchia by appointment. Petros runs the small-animal range at Cholargos.
